This August, Kindness For Kids of Union County took on the incredible task of ensuring that foster children in Union County, NJ, would head back to school prepared and excited, with a brand-new backpack in hand. The Backpack Challenge, a heartwarming initiative aimed at collecting and distributing backpacks filled with school supplies, saw a wave of community support and generosity that exceeded all expectations.
One of the standout moments came when Darby Road Pub, in partnership with the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church (IHM), joined forces with Kindness For Kids for the second year in a row. Owners Donna and Joe, along with their amazing staff, embraced the project with open hearts. With the help of countless donations from patrons and supporters, they gathered at the pub to pack the backpacks. Together, they assembled over 140 beautifully packed backpacks, which were delivered to children in the Union County foster system.
What made this effort even more special was the enthusiasm and energy that everyone at Darby Road poured into the project. The entire team, fueled by community spirit, dedicated hours to the backpack-packing process, making sure each bag was filled with care. Their commitment showcased the true power of community collaboration.
Over 200 Backpacks Collected – And Counting!
As the Backpack Challenge gained momentum, Kindness For Kids shared another milestone: over 200 backpacks had been collected! 🎒🎒🎒 The goal of providing these children with school supplies grew, and so did the generosity of Union County residents. The Backpack Challenge was extended through Labor Day weekend to allow even more people the chance to contribute, with the new goal set at an additional 50 backpacks.
This initiative is more than just about school supplies—it’s about giving these children a sense of belonging and confidence as they start a new school year. For foster children, who may face unique challenges, something as simple as having a new backpack can make a world of difference. The community’s participation in the Backpack Challenge not only ensured that these children are prepared for school but also showed them that they are seen, supported, and cared for.
